People spend hundreds of dollars on toys for their little ones. With such a variety of baby toys on the market today, how can you buy the right toy for the right price? Classic wooden blocks or a colorful dog that recites the alphabet? Nesting cups or a funky overpriced alien cartoon character doll? When the economy is tough, parents have to choose wisely.
First of all, stick to the basics. Remember that your baby does not keep track of trends, so getting him some new hip toy will not buy you any bigger smile than a proven classic toy. Before grabbing something off the shelf, think of its purpose and benefits: is it meant to lie in the toy box or does it engage the child in some sort of activity? Envision him playing with the toy: what would he do? If it's not clicking - toss the toy - he really doesn't need it. Babies learn from just about everything, but if you plan on spending money on something - make it count. Look for hand-eye coordination toys, construction toys, and cause and effect toys. Wooden blocks, toys with bright colors and various shapes, stacking and nesting toys, Montessori toys - are just a few proven and simple choices that won't break the bank. This is not to say that innovative toys on the market are not worth buying - just beware of the cheap, fun-looking toys that aren't meant to provide a developmental benefit.
Secondly, research baby toys online before buying. First, note the ones you like and make a list. Next, check to see if any of them are being recalled or have been recalled previously. If they have been - cross them off; it's better to be on the safe side. Read the reviews for the remaining toys - reviews from fellow parents tend to be most helpful when you're in doubt. Is the toy durable? Does it interest the child? You'll thank yourself for taking the time to be thorough.
Also, be sure to check out online stores. Often times they carry the less popular, but more unique items, some with specific educational purposes. These are the kinds of toys that you won't find at mainstream large chain stores.
Lastly, if you are trying to be mindful of your budget, set a spending limit. If you really liked more than one toy, but can only afford one, pick the one you like best and bring just enough cash to the store. If you only have 50 bucks in your wallet, you can't spend a 100.
So when it comes to buying baby toys, it's important to make a plan, choose toys that are safe, provide a developmental benefit and have lots of positive reviews.
