Baby beanies have been in the market only since 1994. It was first introduced by Ty Warner. Very few people know that this baby beanie which is more commonly referred to as beanie baby was an idea of Ty Warner. By putting in more air the baby beanie was made to look like it had more life in it. It had very less stuffing within it. The normal baby toys have lots of stuffing and are very stiff. These toys which were introduced by Ty Warner had stuffing as well as were filled with little beans. Hence the name beanie baby is used. Many of the competitors had much faith that his toy would not last very long in the market. But, as you can see many of them were not right at all.
The 'original nine' are the first few baby beanies that were made by Ty Warner. Actually they were the first nine that were made by him. Patti the platypus, spot the dog, cubbie the bear, squealer the pig, pinchers the lobster, legs the frog, chocolate the moose, flash the dolphin and splash the killer whale are the nine baby beanies. Collectors of these toys have dubbed them as they were available only at $5.00 each and they were the first beanie babies. A short poem comes along with each of these beanie babies when they are first introduced to toddlers. This was put down on a tag which is heart shaped and is attached to the ear of the animal.
No one knows how many beanie babies are in existence today. The most popular among these baby beanies is the teddy bear. Different colors were used on the same basic pattern to create a family of them. Names were also given to each of them to go on with the tradition. There are also some beanies which have been made for commemorative purposes.
However, the official beanie babies were mostly only animals. They were most often pigs, dogs, cats or hippopotamuses. There are many a times colored brightly to make it look pleasing to the eye. Names are one thing that always comes with these toys. All of them also have their own date of births. The most important of all is the fact that it comes along with a poem each.
The craze for these beanies began in 1996. As there were many who were collecting these toys, it make Ty Warner even retire a few of his toys to hype the sales. Many of them bought these toys in wholesale. However this fad of baby beanie craze sizzled out after a while.
In spite of all this, the baby beanies are still available. However, many children do prefer soft toys as they are easy to hold as well as huggable. Beanie babies also show the kind of personality of the child who owns them.
